Linskeldfield Farm is set amidst approx. 200 acres of Open
Farmland, which is grazed by sheep,
cattle
and a small stud of
miniature Shetland Ponies
(see photos page). We are flanked
by the Fells of the
Northern Lake-district,
so have
breathtaking panoramic views all around us.
The owner's
main 3 storey Farmhouse was built in 1657 and is one of the oldest
houses in the district.
It still retains quite a few of the old,
interesting features and history.
In the Spring of 2007 the Woodland Scheme was entered into. We
planted 16,000 Hard-wood Trees
in fields adjacent
to our 3 modern, Free-range Hen Sheds, so that our 18,000 Free-range
hens could roam
in a secure, large enclosed space
and be truly "Free-range"
Visitors to the Cottages are welcome to purchase these delicious, fresh
and truly free-range eggs for use
during their stay
with us and to take back some back with them when they depart, if they
so wish.
Ideal for that traditional full English Breakfast of Eggs, Bacon and
Cumberland Sausage (which is made and sold locally).
A brilliant start to any day, esp. one spent rambling in the open, fresh
air of the Lake-District.
The nearest local Pub to the Holiday Cottages (it does food too -
Restaurant and Pub Grub) is only
a 5 min drive away.
Or better still, imagine yourselves enjoying an outdoor BBQ on your
Cottage's Patio on a warm
summers' night
in these
surroundings - Bliss!!
We could also
possibly offer
Grass livery
to anyone who would like to
bring their Horse or
Pony
with them
(get in touch to discuss requirements/rates etc.) We have
sufficient space to park your Horsebox too.
This is a fantastic area to hack out. Even better if you have a
partner with you who would like to bring their bike
and accompany you! (We have secure Lock-up facilities for your
Bikes).
There is also a fully qualified B.H.S. Intermediate Instructor who may
be available for private tuition.
Keswick is only a few miles away and is the Walking and Climbing Capital of the Lake
District. It probably has the
best selection of
Walking and Climbing-equipment Shops you could wish to find in one small
Town.
All competing
with their prices
- a brilliant chance to find a bargain!
Keswick also boasts the best selection of Eateries (Restaurants,
Bistros, Cafes, Indian, Chinese, Mexican,
Italian, Pub-grub
and Take-aways) that you will find anywhere in the Lake District.
We are only a few
miles from the
Osprey viewing point at Winlatter Visitor Centre,
Braithwaite, where they have big
plasma screens showing multiple current and time-lapsed pictures from
the cameras over the Osprey's nest.
They have a human-sized Badgers' Set to show kids how Badgers live +
Nature Trails and colour-coded walks
through the woods for the Kids (and adults alike). They also have a
kiddie's rustic Play area.
The Osprey viewpoint at Dodd Woods is only a 10 min drive away.
Here they have high-powered telescopes
trained onto
the Osprey's Nest.
The Ospreys
(the original male has nested here, over Bassenthwaite Lake for the past
few years
- he now has new younger female partner - his original partner didn't
return this year).
They have produced 3 eggs this time - the 3rd egg hatched - 13th June 2007.
2008: same pair; different nest site, opp. side of Bassenthwaite Lake;
eggs laid and awaiting confirmation of hatching ~ beginning
of June 2008
Linskeldfield
Farm has it's own Tarn close-by. Here you can use the 12 man
purpose-built Bird Hide
to watch the Wild Birds, Ducks, Geese and other Water Birds inc. our
resident Swans that are nesting
and sitting on eggs
as I write. Otters and Kingfishers have also been sighted
regularly.
It's a tranquil haven for wild-life - a lovely way to
relax
and wind-down.
It's also a drop-in point for other Ospreys and
Birds of prey.
You are an easy
drive to Carlisle, the Solway Coast and Hadrians Roman wall.
You are not too far away from the rest of the
many Lakes in the Lake
District
(see details on Mountains and Lakes on our "Things
2 see and Do" page
